In my last blog I introduced you to pushing your content out beyond your company website. Slideshare may have been a new community to you but I’m pretty sure that you’ve all heard of Twitter!

Promoting your content

Twitter is a great way to promote your website content and in under 140 characters you need to make sure that how you’re selling it counts. Think of what people will find interesting about your content and then try to write it so it reads in one of two ways:

1)    Like a headline – think of something eye catching, stats are always popular as are good old industry buzz words

2)    Like a thought – think of a comment that you would make on the content to make it personable and show you’re a person not just a company

Twitter example - comment style intro
My last point about showing you’re a person is important on Twitter as people respond much better to individual Tweeters than company accounts. That’s not to say you shouldn’t have a company account, there are many successful ones on Twitter – just make sure you inject some personality into it.

Measure your links

A great way to see what type of content is most popular on Twitter is to use reports that a URL shortening service can provide. They should show you how many clicks you’ve had and also any retweets.

If you’re not new to Twitter than you probably use a dashboard such as Hootsuite or Tweetdeck to manage your activity. These dashboards will usually use their own shortening service and can provide pretty indepth reports, if you don’t have them then you can use Bitly which is free to get an account for and does a good job. In Bitly you can even mask your link so http://bit.ly/xGAJg0 becomes http://bit.ly/greatcontent.

Once you know what type of content works then do more of it!
