Fact:
Search engines use links pointing at your website as a way of determining how important your site is. The more important your site is, the greater chance it has of ranking competitively. Therefore acquiring high quality, relevant links forms part of most SEO strategies.
Don’t underestimate how sophisticated search engines are at determining which links have been acquired unethically. Paying a company to acquire thousands of links for you in a short period of time will at best provide no benefit to your site whatsoever. At worst it could damage your visibility in search engines.
Instead, focus on creating content which makes people want to link to it and share it. Use your presence on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to promote it to your audience. Think of creative ways to acquire links from other sites such as writing guest blog posts which link back to your site. Treat it more as a long-term PR exercise rather than a quick fix.

Most search engine guidelines warn site owners of the risks of buying links to manipulate rankings. Here’s a snippet from Google’s advice (located here)
Some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and can negatively impact your site’s ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include:
- Links intended to manipulate PageRank
- Links to web spammers or bad neighbourhoods on the web
- Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging (“Link to me and I’ll link to you.”)
- Buying or selling links that pass PageRank
